Kinja'd!!!

At my old house, people had a terrible habbit of being shitting drviers and taking out my mailbox. One even snapped a brand new 4x4 P.T. post. Following that I build a box out of 1X4, concrete witha stick of rebar in the middle. The current owner just emailed us thanking me for my supiroir workmanship in preventing the current asshat from leaving.

Well done.

Our houses all have the mail boxes encased in brick pylons on the sidewalk. Plus, we are in a gated community. Still, every once in a while, someone finds a way to destroy one. My neighbor’s is currently in a shambles. At least the assailant didn’t get away unscathed.

Growing up we had a beast of a mailbox. 4” metal pipe, full of cement, encased in 2x6s.

Then one night the son of a county official hit it, really messed up his car. Mailbox was just a little crooked. He took off, but only went a half mile away to a parking lot with lights, and my dad found him. Got his info and all that.

Few weeks later everyone got a letter that mail would only be delivered to boxes on a 4x4 post... Not suspicious at all, right? I think my parents are on post #6 since then. It sucks.

All do the Mailboxes in my area are 2’x2’ brick. You do not simply drive away.

They could just install two bollards on both sides of the mailbox post.

Ours are like that as well. A couple blocks away one is all messed up from being hit. I wasn’t there to see what happened, but I’m assuming there was no driving away.

Bravo!

Many years ago there was a rash on mailboxes getting run over by some punk in my grandpa’s neighborhood. Being a thinking man, he put a large bolder next to his mailbox, so the punk would leave his alone.

One morning he left the house to find his mailbox obliterated, and the bolder in the middle of the street, followed by about a mile long trail of oil.

They never caught the perpetrator, but that was the last box to go down in that crime spree.

Time to drill out that 4x4 post and drive a 2" steel bar through the middle. :P

One of my friends kept getting his (and his neighbor’s) mailboxes destroyed by bored kids with bats and other assorted objects. He decided to set up a 3rd mailbox on the approach side of the other two boxes. He cut a hole in the bottom of the decoy so that the 4x4 post went all the way to the roof of the box. Then he set it up so that the door was pointed up, and filled it with concrete. Let the concrete cure, and set the innocent looking mailbox up to be first in line.

A couple of weeks later, they notice a perfect outline of the head of a putter on the side of the decoy mailbox... and no other damage. The decoy is still standing after all these years.

:-D

Tell the county to pound sand and put up whatever post you want. The USPS recommends 4”x4” posts that break away if cars hit them, but they are not required. They also recommend against posts that could damage a car, but those are recommendations and not requirements. The county has absolutely no say in how a mailbox is mounted. https://www.usps.com/manage/mailboxes.htm
